Essence of Essential Oils

Essential Oils contain the “essence of” the fragrance and characteristics of the plant from which it comes from. Popular uses for essential oils is in aromatherapy where the oils are diffused in the air, burned as incense, or used in massage. There seems to be an essential oil that can fulfill almost any need emotionally or physically.

I have several clients that suffer chronic allergy problems and migraines. I recommend a few essential oils and demonstrate how to apply the oils to help them get some relief.

Allergies

Living in the South, allergies are something almost every person struggles with. Allergies cause all kinds of inflammatory reactions such as rashes, dry patches, headaches, puffy eyes, runny nose, and even digestive issues. I have some good news, for allergy sufferers, there are essential oils that ease inflammation and act as a powerful antihistamine.

  • Lavender is a great way to treat skin rashes and headaches. Lavender not only eases your allergic reactions, but also has a calming and relaxing effect on your body and mind. Used topically by simply adding 1 drop to your cheeks, forehead, and sinuses to soothe headaches and rashes. Next time your allergies are giving you problems just add a few drops of lavender to your cold diffuser; 15 minutes every 2 hours for the best effect.
  • Lemon relieves excess mucus and cools down inflammation from allergic reaction. Lemon works best when paired with Lavender and can be used topically or diffused like the lavender.

Migraines:

Migraines are caused by stress, dehydration, and lack of sleep. Symptoms of migraines is often nausea and sensitivity to light. Instead of immediately filling your body with medicine or caffeine to relieve the ache, try one of these oils:
  • Peppermint is known to be both calming and numbing; for some relief simply apply the peppermint oil to your forehead and temples with a cotton ball. Peppermint is a highly concentrated oil and may irritate your skin. Diluting it by mixing 3 drops of peppermint with 1 tablespoon of water. You should start to feel relief 30 minutes after application. Reapply as necessary.
  • Basil works as a muscle relaxant to relieve headaches or migraines caused by tension and tight muscles. You can massage your temples with 3-4 drops of basil.
For quicker relief, basil works best when you pair it with peppermint. Simply alternate the oils to relieve your migraine.

When used correctly essential oils can relieve most symptoms of sickness but the best remedy is rest. Give your body time to heal and let your immune system do its job. Drinking plenty of water and schedule a massage regularly to help rid your of damaging toxins.
