How Foam Rollers Relieve Muscle Tension

As much as I love it when clients come in to visit, I know it’s not possible to visit your massage therapist every day. Sometimes, muscle tension can be chronic and you need to find some relief in between visits. I like to recommend foam rollers as a great form of self-massage.

How it Works

Foam rollers allow you to release muscle tension on key points on your body. A foam roller applies pressure and loosens muscles that are tight. Many of my clients suffer from knots due to a sedentary lifestyle or stress. It’s common for knots to form anywhere, in our back, shoulders and neck.
By placing a foam roller on a yoga mat, lay down on top of the foam roller and begin rolling over the pain related area. When you first begin, you will feel some pain or discomfort as your muscles begin to release. The pain or discomfort should only be slight and not unbearable. If the pain you are feeling is unbearable, contact your physician immediately because you may have an injury.
Foam rollers are much like getting a deep tissue massage eventually, the discomfort gives way to relief.

Stretching is Not Enough

Stretching, especially, as we get older is a very important part of a daily health routine. Utilizing a foam roller takes stretching to the next level because it allows you to target problem areas and relieves tension. If you need to knock out the knots from a rough day, I recommend using the foam roller and then soak in a tub with a few capfuls of green alcohol.
In no time, you will feel loose and relaxed!
